On January 19, 2026, the National University of Ostroh Academy launched a free certificate programme entitled “Modelling and Analysis of Information Warfare Processes as a Tool for Protecting Democracy in the EU and Countering Threats”.
The first lecture for course participants, entitled “European Integration and Ukraine’s Path to the European Union”, was delivered by Alla Atamanenko, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Department of International Relations, and Head of the Hybrid Threats Research Laboratory.
The speaker discussed the historical context of EU enlargement and Ukraine’s European aspirations; the Association Agreement, visa liberalisation, and EU candidate status; the challenges and opportunities of Ukraine’s accession to the EU; and the impact of the war on Ukraine’s integration into the EU.
Anatoliy Nikitin, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Intelligent Computing, and project manager, noted:
“Today, it is difficult to overestimate the relevance of the programme’s topic, because in the era of the global information society, the dynamics of events can instantly transform public sentiment. The main objectives of the project are to understand the mechanisms of information wave propagation, the ability to model and quantitatively evaluate them, take into account random influences, and, as a result, assess the stability of social systems and counteract destabilisation”.
Olena Shershnova, PhD in Public Administration, Associate Professor, Rector’s Assistant for Project Activities, noted:
“This project is an important element of the university’s strategic development and strengthening of its role in shaping expertise on information security and the protection of democratic values, as it logically integrates into the institutional priorities of internationalisation, research capacity development, and the implementation of European educational practices at Ostroh Academy”.
In the first module, course lecturers will also address the following topics:
Incidentally, the certificate programme is part of the project ‘Modelling and analysing information warfare processes as a tool for protecting democracy in the EU and countering threats’ (101238591 — EUDemCT — ERASMUS-JMO-2025-HEI-TCH-RSCH), which is being implemented by the National University of Ostroh Academy with co-financing from the European Union. The project aims to address critical gaps in understanding the mechanisms of disinformation, the lack of standardised counter-strategies, and low public awareness of information threats.
